FAQS

Everything you want to know about mud kitchens and were too afraid to ask (jk. these are the most asked questions we get):

Where are you located?
Annapolis, MD. 🙂

What is the best way for me to make that payment?
Cash or Venmo is best if possible. We can provide a receipt if needed.

What is the different in size of the mega vs mini mud kitchen?
The dimensions of the ‘maxi’ mud kitchen are 6 feet wide, 4 feet tall, and a 24″ counter height.
The dimensions of the ‘mini’ mud kitchen are 5 feet wide, 43 (3’7″) inches tall, and a 22″ counter height.

Below are photos of our three kids (9, 5, and 3) in front of a maxi and a mini mud kitchen (the mini being in progress, but you get the idea of the size difference).

How should we prep the space where we are installing our mud kitchen?
For underneath the kitchen itself, the most important thing is to make it as level as possible. Pavers or bricks can be used under leg on a low side, but as the wood is pressure treated it isn’t necessary to protect the wood. You can even dig the legs into the ground if you find it too tall and want to bring the height down.

We recommend keeping the water faucet disconnected in winter (you don’t want water in the faucet when it freezes or it will break), so you also want to think about drainage. While you can try to catch most water with a 5-gallon bucket, gravel/stone/mulch will help ensure it doesn’t get too muddy underneath. Also think about where excessive water will drain to if not caught, having the mud kitchen near water loving plants is a great win-win.

Pavers or mulch in front of the mud kitchen is helpful in keeping down mud and defining the area.

Do you recommend treating the wood with anything to reduce weathering?
All wood materials are pressure treated so additional treatment is not necessary, but we do recommend a waterproof sealer to reduce cosmetic weathering and extend the life (this is also something we offer). You can find a water-based sealant, but a simple deck sealant like Thompson’s is what we use and recommend (it is low-VOC).

Vegemite or Marmite?
Vegemite of course (…do you really have to ask?)

Cats or dogs?
Dogs (Mandy is allergic to cats). She would also like to specify small senior special need dogs, the less teeth the better.

Favorite Joke?
What’s green and sits in the corner? A naughty frog.
